Chromatic Typewriter

By replacing the ink ribbon with paint blocks on an antique typewriter, artist Tyree Callahan has created a new conceptual medium in which the notions of paint and words converge. Initially started as an experiment to apply watercolor text to a work in progress, the project grew to the resulting object, aptly named the chromatic typewriter.

“I also tried to incorporate things that would offer a significant suspension of disbelief to the piece. The ribbon, for one. At the moment, it is a slice of a stellar spectrum analysis of our sun. An homage to the one thing that really makes art what it is in the universe: light. The keyboard's spacebar also incorporates the idea of 'negative space.'"

These pencils bear six of the 131 actions items that We Are What We Do list as ways to make someone’s day, make your home a bit greener and overall, do a little chunk of good. I really hope the organization comes out with a giant box of 131 Action Pencils. A vibrantly colorful desk and a happier life would be the end result I think.

My Grandpa Jud used to play records for me all the time as a kid. I would sit on his floor while he propped his feet up, sat back in his worn leather chair, and smoked apple tobacco from his pipe. Whether it was rock or gospel, grandpas head would nod to the rhythm of the beat. I would always know what record was playing by the spinning colors and patterns in the center of the player. The rotating gradients would put you in a trance, only to be stopped by grandpa changing the record.

Alfonso Zubiaga takes you over New York’s busy streets and through its most recognizable landmarks. By zooming in and out of everything from its iconic skyscrapers to its trademark yellow taxi cabs, he takes us on a wild ride.

The series was shot in 2008 and that the photos were taken from the Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building as well as all around Manhattan over the course of 10 days. Using a single image, he reconstructed it digitally by successive layering and by centering the image in the places that piqued his interest the most.

"I wanted to evoke the feeling of vertigo in the city," he tells us. "New York is probably the most photographed city in the world, and my intention is to portray it in a different way than what has been done so far."

A collection of art prints by avid cyclist and illustrator Thomas Yang, that not only feature, but also driven by, the passionon for cycling.

When asked what the story is behind each illustration, here is what Yang said:

Ride Your Love - "This is the very first design that I came up with. It's a view from the top of my office building looking at those bikes parked below. The shape of the saddle actually looks like a heart."

Recycle - "I 'googled' more cycling posters and I noticed lots of them talk about re-cycling. Without using words (that's the rule in my poster design) I manage to connect all the bikes into a circle which is similar to the universal icon of recycle (3 arrows that goes around)."

Skyway - "I remember reading, from a bike magazine, them talking about burning the fats and not the oil. So this is a direct translation. The more we cycle, the nicer our environment becomes."

I've featured the rainbow warrior and now here is an artist with a truly unique subject: Curtis Killorn paints trees - dead trees - in all the colors of the rainbow.

I paint dead trees in bright colors in the mountains of Colorado as public art. These trees have been featured in many local and regional newspapers and magazines and have really taken on a life of their own. I am now receiving requests from the community to provide my work on their properties.

The surreal art of Clement Vala captured in screenshots straight from Google Earth. Zooming into Google Earth at just the right angle and it looks like these bridges are melting right into the world itself. Almost Salvador Dali-esque. Send a postcard.

The images are screenshots from Google Earth with basic color adjustments and cropping. I am collecting these new typologies as a means of conservation--as Google Earth improves its 3D models, its terrain, and its satellite imagery, these strange, surrealist depictions of our built environment and its relation to the natural landscape will disappear in favor of better illusionistic imagery. However, I think these strange mappings of the 2-dimensional and the 3-dimensional provide us with fabulous forms that are purely the result of algorithmic processes and not of human aesthetic decision making. They are artifacts worth preserving.

When an agency and a Chinese environmental group collaborate you can visualize environmental impact of just about anything. In this installation a clever representation of disposable wooden chopsticks on the streets of downtown Shanghai in the shape of a tree.

According to the China Environmental Protection Foundation, every year the Chinese consumes 45 billion pairs of disposable wooden chopsticks which equal around 25 million trees.

To raise awareness about the problem, the foundation went around Shanghai and gathered 30,000 pairs of used disposable chopsticks from the city's restaurants. They built a tree in a busy district of the city – and chopped it down.

Illegal Rainbows

Rainbows have reflected on this blog previously, however didn't reoccur as often as this street artist has been improving dull building facades.

In an ongoing series titled Illegal Rainbows, an unknown artist dubbed the Rainbow Warrior is using spilled paint to pour rainbows off the tops of buildings in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In an interview with the street artist, the rainbows are a way to cope with depression. However, city officials don't see anything socially good about defacing buildings. You be the judge.

The poem in the park consists of 5 lines with each line lasting about an hour.

The results of an extensive exploration with shadows, the One Day Poem Pavilion demonstrates the poetic, transitory, site-sensitive and time-based nature of light and shadow.Using a complex array of perforations, the pavilion’s surface allows light to pass through creating shifting patterns, which – during specific times of the year – transform into the legible text of a poem.

Birds on the Wire

Creating a composition like a songbird inspired by a crows perched on some telephone wires. Jarbas Agnelli spotted a picture of the birds in a newspaper and noticed they were arranged like notes on a musical score and struck a chord.

Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn’t the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating.

Keys With a View and Locks of Love

I took these photos of a project titled "Keys With a View" in Old Wilmington, NC while visiting the USS North Carolina and decided to have lunch in town. After walking past this fence, originally we thought a historic building was recently demolished and those keys were inside and attacked to the fence. After doing some research I found out it was actually an art installation. At the end of this project the fence will hold about 60,000 keys. It currently holds about 20,000, “give or take 3,000.”

The one question I did ask myself, "if you have all these keys...where are the locks?"

In another art project of all places!

Locks of Love symbolizes love and good luck in relationships. The locks are adorned with the names or initials of couples, then locked alongside many others. The key is tossed away, so the locks can not be undone. Love how these compliment each other.

"love love" is an amusing, unusual floating sculpture by Julien Berthier. Made from a large sailboat that has been modified to appear as if it is capsizing. Despite its appearance the boat is fully functional and has built-in motor.

A yacht was cut in half and a new keel was added to allow the boat to remain upright in the sinking position.

A brewery in the UK has created what it says is the world’s strongest beer, at 110 proof: The End Of History. That’s not the weird part. It's all about the product packaging!

Only 12 bottles have been made and each comes with its own certificate and is presented in a stuffed stoat or grey squirrel. The striking packaging was created by a very talented taxidermist and all the animals used were road kill.

You can get a bottle here, but be prepared to spend a pretty penny.
